Daily movement is vital to improving the quality of life for people living with pain. However, many of us have limitations and are unable to participate in a typical 5km run or walk. Plus, as a province-wide organization, we want to create an inclusive event that involves all British Columbians.

That’s why Pain BC has created a brand new event to raise money and awareness for chronic pain. No matter where you live or what your physical abilities are… you can get involved!

A DAY OF MOVEMENT SUNDAY JUNE 12TH, 2016

This day exists because Pain BC is dedicated towards promoting health in our community, as well as raising awareness for chronic pain. Your participation offers you the opportunity to do something healthy for yourself and support those who deal with chronic pain every day.

Just Yoga Studio Review

Just Yoga Studio Review

Vancouver Yoga Review was recently invited to experience Just Yoga, a local yoga studio in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood. Since opening earlier this year, they’ve attracted many loyal yogis and yoginis with their down-to-earth approach to yoga and wellness. Just Yoga provides mindful, authentic and accessible yoga classes in Vancouver – it’s yoga with heart and soul!

The following is our team member Kat Wong’s lovely experience at Just Yoga:

It was pouring rain and as the day dimmed before supper, I was really in need of some comfort.  I stopped into Just Yoga studio on Broadway and Quebec St.  The owner, Jeni, who was very pleasant and friendly, greeted me as soon as I stepped inside.  It was warm and cozy and carried an ancient aroma.  She showed me around her studio and I couldn’t help but be reminded of Bali.  The studio floor is absolutely gorgeous and I was very surprised about how spacious it was.  It’s evident that a lot of love and care went into create a beautiful and peaceful space.  I was led through a very relaxing Yin class, led by Beverly and was reminded that all bodies are unique and that I should listen to my own.  Just Yoga is a wonderful space to practice yoga.  They make it very accommodating for all levels and welcome everyone to practice.  I had a lovely experience and would definitely practice there again.  It really was like a small vacation for me.

Still Tickets Left for Paul Muller-Ortega next Weekend!

Still Tickets Left for Paul Muller-Ortega next Weekend!

With the onset of fall and the need to draw more inward focus, it’s the perfect time to spend a weekend in meditation and learning. We are very fortunate to have renowned scholar and teacher Paul Muller-Ortega here for a weekend of Sadhana Satsang Inner Space Yoga on Oct 20-21.

Tickets are $300+hst with the class running all Saturday and Sunday (9:30am-5:30pm). Register online here. Don’t miss out on this unique event!

Detailed description of the weekend:

Churn the Ocean of Infinite Possibility and thus invite the most auspicious life for yourself! The ancient Hindu myth
of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk symbolically conveys the centrality and importance of authentic Yogic practice, Sadhana. It is Sadhana, not philosophy or mere ideology which lies at the center of the Tantric Shaivite Yogic tradition. Through the daily application of profound and profoundly transformative Tantric Yogic practices, the
practitioner begins to experience the nectarean luster of the Light of Consciousness within.

Sadhana churns our awareness. It allows for the arising of fulfillment as an ongoing quality of each moment. Through authentic, deep practice, our inherent gifts and skills are gradually, spontaneously activated and become accessible to us. Sadhana becomes the living doorway through which we can inquire ongoingly into the nature of the Great Consciousness, into Reality, into the very Existence of Life itself.

Embark upon a journey with renowned scholar and beloved teacher Paul Muller-Ortega for a Sadhana Satsang where we will deepen our understanding of Tantric Sadhana and learn powerful, elegant, yet accessible practices for the revelation of the Light of Consciousness. Paul will guide students in the Release Practice, Japa (recitation of mantras), Meditation and other beautiful and potent techniques.

Just Yoga Vancouver – Mount Pleasant Studio

Just Yoga Vancouver – Mount Pleasant Studio

A new Mount Pleasant yoga studio opened a few months ago with a practical philosophy to yoga & wellbeing:

Just Yoga aims to provide a safe, friendly, down-to earth approach to all things holistic and soulfully wonderful. We believe in re-connecting Vancouver, on and off the mat, we believe in having a low environmental footprint, and we believe in making yoga truly accessible to everyone, which means keeping class prices as low as possible and offering discounts to those who need it. We honour our teachers and those who have taught before us, our members and everyone in our community, and uphold respect for all living beings as equals.

The studio itself was designed, renovated, and is run by Jeni Bond, with the help of a wonderful band of teachers with healing backgrounds. Jeni believes in the power of yoga to heal, through connection with yourself, with others and the Earth. She set up Just Yoga to share the tools, techniques and lessons that have helped her along the way.

“If it wasn’t for yoga I’m not sure where I’d be, I need that balance. When you feel lost, disconnected, lonely, sick or depressed, reach out for something that will elevate your spirit – yoga is one way to do that.”

Healing is the main goal, on all levels. Teaching people to listen to themselves, to delve deeply into their lives and find courage to heal and re-connect with others. Teachers learn people’s names and encourage them to talk to each other, deepening their connections. This is yoga with heart & soul.

Alternative to Big Box Yoga Studios Opens in Mount Pleasant

Alternative to Big Box Yoga Studios Opens in Mount Pleasant

Vancouver, BC –Good karma is headed to Mount Pleasant with the opening of Yogācāra’s third boutique yoga studio, and first franchise, on September 15. Unlike big-box yoga centers, this community-centered studio focuses on small class sizes and personal attention from yoga teachers in order to help practitioners achieve true mind, body, and soul balance. Yogācāra offers a variety of classical yoga styles including Hatha, Yin, Restorative, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Yoga Nidra and Pilates.

“We are so excited to open our newest location here in Mount Pleasant,” says Camellia Rumball, studio owner of Yogācāra Mount Pleasant. “We provide a wellness-based approach to practicing yoga that encourages all people to incorporate yoga into their lives. At Yogācāra, we have something for everyone and we are looking forward to connecting with both lifelong practitioners and new yogis in the community.”

Yogācāra’s classes are deliberately small (limit of 14 students per class) and intimate, enabling teachers to provide more care and attention to each student. The warm setting, combined with after class tea and snacks creates an attractive and much needed sense of community.

As part of its Grow Yoga, Build Community vision, Yogācāra is deeply committed to making yoga accessible to everyone while also supporting social causes. The company offers a Karma Yoga Program, which allows students to attend yoga classes simply by making a donation of a canned good. Yogācāra donates $3 for every student who attends the class to a local charity.

Yogācāra already has two popular studios located in Kitsilano (read our review here) and Riley Park, and plans to continue expanding to grow yoga and build community throughout the Metro Vancouver.

For more information on Yogācāra, visit www.yogacarastudios.com, connect with them on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter.

Fall in Love with Flying at che baba’s Yogasilks!

Fall in Love with Flying at che baba’s Yogasilks!

Recently, I had the outstanding pleasure of attending a 2hr Sunday session of “Yogasilks” at che baba, yoga and cantina, 603 Kinsgway in Vancouver. It was the most fun I have had in a yoga class since I tried my first partner yoga class last year and got the taste for “flying” poses.

And fly you will! Led by the uber-talented kiwi-born Vancouver teacher, Yogasilks founder and long-time yogi, Ross Howatson, this class hosted 10 fresh-faced and excited beginners to Yogasilks and we had an absolute blast.

Suspended from “silks” – think: long, stretchy, silky sheets tied at two corners –  suspended from the ceiling, students are led through a series of yoga poses ranging from Warrior 1, Trikonasana, hip openers, heart openers, core strengtheners to breathing exercises, relaxation and gentle inversions.

With an adventuresome group ready to take on the thrill of the silks, we were challenged with a few fun and crazy cirque-de-soleil-esque moves: fallen angel (sees you threading through and dropping out of the silks – safely though!), handstand (with legs threaded through the silks – what an amazing experience!) and a few more inversions (think Sukasana, easy pose, but upside down and dangling). Ending class coccooned sweetly in the silks with a guided relaxation, I left feeling settled and grounded. Not to mention, my hips, legs and back felt amazing all week!

Ross did a brilliant job of encouraging, humouring and challenging the Yogasilks students. I would strongly recommend this 2hr workshop to anyone who loves hanging around, playing, having fun and trying something new in your yoga practice.  I fully intend to be back on a regular basis!

After the workshop, the participants all enjoyed tapas at the attached cantina. The food is simply incredible. A sweet little spot, che baba was started by a young local couple, Allison and Stephan, who love sharing yoga, great food, and creating community.

Try Yogasilks. Seriously. Bring your friends. You will fall in love with Ross, the silks, che baba and the whole experience.

Che baba runs 2hr workshops on Sundays (first two weeks of August cancelled for trainings), which are a great introduction for beginners. The studio runs a regular Yogasilks drop-in class during the week, which will start back in the fall. In the meantime, che baba also touts a full drop-in schedule of other classes, which would be a great excuse to do some yoga before enjoying a meal at the cantina!

Love the idea and want to get teaching it? Yogasilks classes are currently in development at other studios and teachers will be needed! Che baba only has a few spots available for Yogasilks Teacher Training, Aug 11-12, 9am-5pm (delicious lunch provided by the cantina), $640+hst. For more information please contact Ross Howatson at yogasilksinfo@gmail.com.

Make time for Yogasilks in September and enjoy flying and hanging around! Please comment below if you have already attended a session and let me know about your experiences!

YYoga Expands to Kitsilano

In mid-June, YYoga is set to open the doors of their new Kitsilano studio. In a controversial move, the new location on 4th ave and Cypress is just 3 blocks down from the neighbourhood’s longstanding and much loved Semperviva studio.

Vancouver’s Che Baba Cantina & Yoga Studio

Vancouver’s Che Baba Cantina & Yoga Studio

There’s a new yoga studio in Vancouver that combines yoga and food! Che Baba Cantina & Yoga Studio effortlessly marries southern French and Mediterranean-inspired fine dining with Hatha yoga:

Che Baba’s yoga studio opened where Kingsway and Fraser connect in November, its cantina, which is linked by a corridor, at the end of December. It’s meant to be a place for locals to socialize and indulge in a healthy way.

Che Baba’s studio hums with an early 1970s vibe complete with heated parquet floors, textured walls and cedar accents. The cozy 28-seat cantina features a stone bar built around an open kitchen.

Gagnon said the two businesses will support each other so there’ll be no pressure for the intimate yoga studio to expand or increase its fees. It offers classes for all levels with prices ranging from $10 to $15 per session […] via Vancouver Courier

Live Well in the New Live Yoga Studio

Live Well in the New Live Yoga Studio

Live Yoga in White Rock made an exciting change of venue this past week and students are thoroughly enjoying the new location!

Having resided in a quaint character building in White Rock for the last six years, Live Yoga turned a page at the end of March and said goodbye to their cozy studio and said hello to their new, larger, street-level space jut down the road. They will continue to offer a complete current schedule of great yoga classes, but now there is more space to really stretch out and relax without kicking the window sills!

The new studio will have someone on-site Monday to Saturday from 10:30am – 6:00pm. Live Yoga now houses a beautiful Wellbeing Shop where you can purchase a wide variety of items – from natural perfumes, to malas, and books – most of which are locally purchased. They are also selling Half Moon Yoga props and are able to order in any Half Moon products for you if not on the shelves.

Live Yoga’s goal is to continue building community and ensuring that you have a blissful yoga experience every time you come to class. All of their teachers have a very high level of training, kind hearts and love teaching yoga!

Find a full list of drop-in classes, preregistered series, and much more at www.liveyoga.ca or visit the new location (only a block away from the previous location!) at 15186 Buena Vista Avenue in White Rock.

Congratulations Live Yoga!

Bhakti Dub and Jungle Love – Yoga, Bliss and Reggae with Sean O’Leary

This Friday and next Saturday, make plans to spend a heart-felt, spiritually-uniting, jamming practice with Sean O’Leary!

Sean will be sharing two joyous yoga sessions in the upcoming weeks: Jungle Love at Hari Om Yoga in Langley on Friday (Jan 20) and Bhakti Dub next Saturday (Jan 28) ay Kushala Yoga in Suter Brook, Port Moody.

If you haven’t taken a class with Sean before, you’ll love him. His warmth and enthusiasm will brighten even the snowiest day, and the practice he leads always leaves you feeling buoyant and sweet. And yes, he is always that happy. Don’t miss out on these unique classes!

From Kushala Yoga:

My brother from another mother, my sister from a different mister, let us unite! Come for an afternoon of bliss (ananda), with me (Sean), and embrace the art of Bhakti. This all levels asana class will focus on building community, friendship, and unconditional love for your neighbor. The twist will be the funky rhythms of reggae and dub filling the room with good vibrations.

Visionaries like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh had a heartfelt belief that all hate, inequality, and racism in the world could be cured through music. This one love mentality will be magnified through a series of group asana (poses) and partner assists. Everyone has an inborn natural desire to love, embrace and radiate happiness. So come groove, laugh, connect, share, and amplify your love for all people in the universe.

Join Sean for the sweetness of a loving practice to warm the soul:
