Bikram Yoga Cambie

Bikram Yoga Cambie

I must admit.  I am a little biased.  I have been a Bikram yoga teacher for the past 7 years.  I first started practicing at Bikram Yoga Cambie many years ago.  Naturally, I was very excited when the doors to the new Cambie studio opened on Sunday.

I have taken 2 classes there now.  I have to say…the heat is perfect!   Even though it can get really steamy in the room, you never feel like you don’t have enough air.  They have a state of the art heat/oxygen exchange system. The bonus, there are 6 showers for women.  No more big line ups after class waiting for the shower.

Go check it out for yourself.  You won’t be disappointed.  Located in City Square Mall on the corner of Cambie and 12th.  You get free parking for 2 hours.  If you need more time, you can go purchase some fruit after class and get an extra hour for free.

Namaste.

Hockey Star Turned Yogi? Milan Lucic Visits Bikram’s Yoga Metrotown

Vancouver native and Boston Bruins forward, Milan Lucic, tried yoga for the very first time this month when he stopped by Bikram’s Yoga Metrotown. The Stanley Cup champion (who was toting the coveted cup around Vancouver last week) was surprised the hot and sweaty yoga class was so challenging and he even found relief from a shoulder injury.

Lucic’s not the only professional hockey player to include yoga in his fitness routine. Teammate, Tim Thomas, has been practicing yoga for over four years and openly attributes his success on the ice to regular yoga practice. Other hockey players such as Mark Messier, Mark Recchi and George Laraque have all practiced yoga to further compliment their game.

According to Bikram’s Yoga Metrotown’s owner, Brad Colwell, Lucic has insisted he will return to the Burnaby studio for training in summer 2012.

Robbie Williams Takes Up Bikram Yoga To Battle Take That

No no, Robbie’s not fighting with Take That members again – they have actually let him back in the band and Take That is touring again. Robbie has always been plagued by stage fright, so to combat his nerves, he has enlisted the assistance of a new friend named Bikram. Yes, for the past three months, Robbie Williams has been sweating it out, through 26 poses. Robbie believes his twice a week sessions of 90-minute yoga has helped him become fitter and overcome his nerves.

“Rob suffers from crippling anxiety and has been worried about the lads’ forthcoming concerts. A pal suggested Bikram yoga to refocus his pent-up energy and handle stress more effectively. After a couple of sessions he was hooked – and sweating like a wildebeest. While the others have stuck to the gym or pool, Robbie’s been using meditation and yoga to help his stagefright and to keep him sane on tour.”

This just goes to show what I believe – that yoga can help almost anyone, from almost anywhere, through almost anything. I have a few friends here in Vancouver who don’t think yoga is for them (mostly male friends). However, the majority of them haven’t actually tried yoga! Encourage your friends to try a yoga class, before they jump to conclusions. Hey, they might surprise themselves and actually enjoy the experience 😉

What is Hot Yoga/Bikram’s Yoga?

In Vancouver, companies such a YYoga and West Coast Hot Yoga, and the newly opened Moksha Yoga, have developed their own unique hot yoga classes like “Power Vinyasa” and “Hot Flow” – which are practiced in moderately heated rooms: around 30°C- 32°C (86°F – 89.6°F).

Power Vinyasa integrates the breath with movement and builds strength, flexibility and core stability. Sequences include standing, balancing, seated, twisting and inverted postures that keeps the class fresh and lively.

Hot Flow includes basic sun salutations, standing and balancing postures, yoga-core specific postures, introduction to arm balancing, and hip and spinal awakening postures.

So while Bikram’s Yoga is always hot yoga, not all Hot Yoga is Bikram’s style!

Have you tried hot yoga? What do you think about this intense style of yoga?
