Alternative to Big Box Yoga Studios Opens in Mount Pleasant

Alternative to Big Box Yoga Studios Opens in Mount Pleasant

Vancouver, BC –Good karma is headed to Mount Pleasant with the opening of Yogācāra’s third boutique yoga studio, and first franchise, on September 15. Unlike big-box yoga centers, this community-centered studio focuses on small class sizes and personal attention from yoga teachers in order to help practitioners achieve true mind, body, and soul balance. Yogācāra offers a variety of classical yoga styles including Hatha, Yin, Restorative, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Yoga Nidra and Pilates.

“We are so excited to open our newest location here in Mount Pleasant,” says Camellia Rumball, studio owner of Yogācāra Mount Pleasant. “We provide a wellness-based approach to practicing yoga that encourages all people to incorporate yoga into their lives. At Yogācāra, we have something for everyone and we are looking forward to connecting with both lifelong practitioners and new yogis in the community.”

Yogācāra’s classes are deliberately small (limit of 14 students per class) and intimate, enabling teachers to provide more care and attention to each student. The warm setting, combined with after class tea and snacks creates an attractive and much needed sense of community.

As part of its Grow Yoga, Build Community vision, Yogācāra is deeply committed to making yoga accessible to everyone while also supporting social causes. The company offers a Karma Yoga Program, which allows students to attend yoga classes simply by making a donation of a canned good. Yogācāra donates $3 for every student who attends the class to a local charity.

Yogācāra already has two popular studios located in Kitsilano (read our review here) and Riley Park, and plans to continue expanding to grow yoga and build community throughout the Metro Vancouver.

Infrared Sauna Before Or After Yoga?

Infrared saunas offer a variety of health benefits – including helping to excrete toxins, boosting your immune system, aiding in weight control, and improving cardiovascular health. They provide many benefits similar to natural sunlight while protecting you from the dangerous effects of UV radiation.

If you’re unfamiliar with infrared saunas, they differ from traditional hot coal saunas by emitting heat from infrared radiant heaters. During an infrared sessions, I usually feel quite warm – but not overly hot, perspire a bit – but don’t end up drenched in a pool of sweat. I feel like I’m warmed from the inside-out, instead of the outside-in.

Whether you are majorly into Bikram yoga, or don’t dig being overly hot, an infrared sauna session is a great way to warm up. It’s especially comforting when Vancouver winters are dark and dreary. Sauna before or after a Hatha or Kundalini class? It’s really up to you and what works best for your body.

There are a few yoga studios around Vancouver that offer infrared saunas: YYoga Flow and Yogacara Studio are two that I enjoy.

Let us know in the comments below: Where do you love to go for an infrared sauna session?

Yogacara Studio Review

Yogācāra is an intimate studio conveniently located in Kitsilano – on Traflagar & Broadway. I was lucky enough to try out a Hatha class by Christine on Monday of last week. Upon my arrival, I was warmly greeted by Studio Director Helene, who kindly gave me a tour of her lovely studio.

Yogācāra is translated from Sanskrit as “one whose practice is Yoga.” One of their mantras is “Yoga…not about being trendy…just about being!” I feel they have achieved a warm, inviting and authentic space that really is about ‘being’.

Complimentary tea, water and cookies!

They have a 13 mat limit, creating a perfect atmosphere for individualized attention from the yoga teacher. Also, they have a raised platform in which the teacher conducts her class from – great for beginners to see how to properly attempt each pose.

Yogācāra offers delicious teas, snacks and water for guests to partake in, in their front waiting area. This room is also a lovely area to meet and chat with fellow yogis before or after each class.

Choosing to affix large Buddhas on the wall (instead of large mirrors) adds to the peaceful atmosphere of their studio. The studio was also exceptionally clean and tidy, which enhanced the zen ambiance.

Mats are provided, as well as all yoga props – all extremely clean as well (cleaner than any other yoga studio I’ve been to in Vancouver). Even if I’m attending a studio that usually provides mats, I will always bring my own. When I return to Yogācāra, I don’t feel the need to bring my own yoga mat.

Christine provided an excellent Hatha class. Rain pattered gently on the window, calming music played quietly in the background, and candles flickered softly during the rejuvenating class.  I felt like all my major muscles were properly stretched and left class with such a buzz (calm, yet energized all at the same time) that I would have sworn it was a bright, sun-shiny day outside and not a dull, dreary, rainy one!

Yogācāra just might be my new favorite studio – check them out today http://yogacara.ca/

Private, individual Far Infrared Sauna sessions are offered. Your first session is $15.00. Teaching training is also offered by the studio, click here.
